How the birds are scored

outline

Scores are derived from ebird data in 5 categories

each category receives a score of 0-5

birds are scored on a scale of 0-25

Categories

  • Conservation Status

A higher the extinction risk equates to more points. Exceptions to the max 25 points are found in this category. Species previously thought to be extinct are automatically awarder 30 points total and any newly discovered species (by me or my team) will be automatically awarded 35 points.

  • Continental Spread

Continental Spread is derived from the number of continents the species has been seen on, according to eBird Sightings. There must be 5 purple squares on a continent for it to count. A bird found on 7 continents is deemed as rare as 1 continent due to the fact that there are very few bird species that are able to survive and reach anywhere around the globe.

  • Zooms

Zooms are a measure of how refined a species range is. The more you can zoom in on the eBird map without sightings being cut off equates to a higher localization of the population. This means it can only be found in a specific area of the world. Some birds are so refined that their zoom level is greater than 5. Scores are maxed at 5 zooms.

  • eBird Sightings

The more people that have seen this bird, the lower the score.

  • Ebird Photos

The same concept applies to eBird photos. Less photos = more points
